Refinishing, entails repairing and repainting the fireplace surround. The fireplace surround generally refers to the mantel, legs (or jambs), and the hearth. The mantel is the horizontal shelf above the firebox, while the legs are the vertical supports on either side. The hearth is the flat, non-combustible floor area at the base of the fireplace.
